A landscape painting from a photo starts with a picture of a real place, like a lake, a mountain view, a beach, a cabin, a house or a farm, and turns it into a painting for your wall. Canvas Memories paints your photo with AI in oil, watercolor, acrylic or impressionist style and shows you a free preview. If you order, we print it on stretched canvas with archival, UV-resistant inks. Canvas prices run from $55 (8x10) to $215 (30x40), shipping included, and US orders usually arrive in 5–9 business days.

What to paint

Lakes, mountains, beaches and home

Photos of places are some of the most popular photos people turn into paintings with us, and most have nobody in them. Here’s what works for each kind of place.

A lake or a cabin

Still water, the dock, the tree line on the far shore. Lake photos make calm, detailed paintings. If you have a shot from the end of the dock or the cabin porch, start with that one.

Try watercolor for a quiet morning and oil for a warm evening.

Mountains

Big views often look flat on a phone. Paint gives them their depth back. A little foreground helps, like trees, a trail or a fence line.

Impressionist handles sky and snow well.

A beach or a sunset

Sunsets never look on a phone the way they did in person. Watercolor softens the sky back toward what you remember. Keep the horizon in the frame. A slightly dark photo is fine.

Watercolor for soft light, acrylic for bold color.

Your home, house or farm

The house you grew up in, the one you just bought, the barn and the fields behind it. Daylight photos taken from the front work best, with the whole building and a strip of sky in the frame.

Oil suits old wood, brick and pasture; watercolor suits bright painted houses.

The places you love

The places you love, and what you do there

Some of the best landscape paintings have one small figure in them, doing the thing they love. The first cast of the morning. The walk up the 18th fairway. The wave they finally caught. If the person is part of the place, leave them in. If not, the spot on its own works just as well.

  • A day fishing: the boat, the dock, the catch
  • The golf course: the hole with the view, the clubhouse at dusk
  • The surf spot: the break, the board on the sand
  • Hunting camp: the cabin, the blind at first light, the truck on the logging road
  • The ski hill, the trailhead, the campsite

Picking the photo

  • You don't need anyone in it. A place on its own makes a complete painting.
  • Morning and evening light give the richest color, but a midday photo works too.
  • Keep some foreground if you can, like the dock, a fence or a path. It gives the painting depth.
  • Pick the clearest view, not the newest photo. Small blur and phone noise matter less once it's painted.
  • Only have a printed photo? Take a picture of it in daylight, straight on, without glare.

Questions about landscape paintings

Can you turn a photo of our lake house into a painting?

Yes. Upload the photo, pick a style and you'll see the painting in about a minute, free. Lake houses and cabins work well because of the water, the dock and the trees around them. If you like the preview, we print it on stretched canvas and ship it to you, or straight to someone else as a gift. Canvas starts at $55.

Does the photo need people in it?

No. A photo of just the place makes a complete painting, and most of the landscape photos people send us have nobody in them. If someone is part of the memory, like a person on the dock or a surfer on the beach, leave them in.

What size canvas is best for a landscape painting?

Go bigger than you think. Landscapes hold up well at large sizes, and 18x24 ($109) and 30x40 ($215) are the canvas sizes people choose most for places. Above a sofa, a bed or a fireplace, 24x36 ($159) or 30x40 fills the space. For a desk, a shelf or a hallway, 11x14 or 16x20 ($95) is plenty. Shipping is included in every price.

Oil or watercolor: which style is best for a landscape?

Both work, for different moods. Oil gives deep color and the look of thick brushstrokes, which suits mountains, farms, forests and evening light. Watercolor is lighter and softer, which suits lakes, beaches, sunsets and snow. Impressionist is looser and more colorful, and acrylic is bold and bright. The preview is free, so try more than one on the same photo before you decide.

I want to turn my travel photos into canvas art. Can you do that?

Yes. Vacation photos work the same way: upload the photo, choose a style and see the preview free. Coastlines, mountain views, city streets and sunsets all make good paintings. Our page on turning vacation photos into art has more ideas.

Can I give a painting of someone's house or farm as a gift?

Yes. At checkout, tick "This is a gift", enter their name and address and write a message. We ship it straight to them with your message printed on the packing slip. If you'd rather wrap it yourself, ship it to your own address instead.

Is it hand-painted?

No. Your photo is painted by AI in the style you choose, and you see the result before you pay. We then print it on stretched canvas with archival, UV-resistant inks. That's why it costs far less than a commissioned painting.

How long does it take to arrive?

Printing takes 2–5 business days. In the US, orders usually arrive 5–9 business days after you order. Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia take 8–17 business days. Shipping is included in the price.

What if my photo is old, dark or a little blurry?

Try it anyway. The preview is free, and a painting doesn't need every detail of the photo. Very dark or very small photos give weaker results, so use the clearest version you have.

Your phone holds the view. Your wall should too.

Upload the photo, try a style or two and see it as a painting in about a minute. It’s free to look.
